Warrenpoint Town 'part ways' with boss Stephen McDonnell following nightmare start to season

Warrenpoint Town have 'parted ways' with manager Stephen McDonnell.

The Milltown club confirmed McDonnell's departure on Wednesday night.

It comes 24 hours after Warrenpoint crashed to a 7-0 defeat to Linfield at Windsor Park, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Danske Bank Premiership.

It was the latest result in what has been a nightmare season so far for the Co Down outfit.

Warrenpoint have lost 11 of their 12 games so far this season, their solitary win coming in a late 4-3 success over Dungannon Swifts on October 5.

Club director Connaire McGreevy announced McDonnell's departure in a statement on Wednesday night.

“It has been a disappointing start to this years campaign," he said.

“However, I want to place my thanks to Stevie for his time here at Warrenpoint.

“During that time we had a successful Premiership season last year and an Irish Cup semi-final.

“I hold Stevie as a friend inside and outside of football and know he has a long future ahead of him.

“However, at this time the board of Warrenpoint feel that we need to make a change to get us back competing in the league.

“We will make an interim appointment shortly and at the same time we are opening up the position to applicants."

McDonnell was appointed Warrenpoint manager back in April last year after serving as interim boss two months previous.

He guided the club to Premiership safety that season and last year they finished 10th in the top flight and reached the semi-finals of the Irish Cup.
