Warrenpoint Town and Ballymena United charged following Irish Cup trouble

Warrenpoint Town and Ballymena United have both been charged by the IFA following this month's Irish Cup fracas at Milltown.

Warrenpoint goalkeeper Mark Byrne was red carded after finding himself involved in an heated altercation with away supporters in the dying moments of the sixth round fixture on February 1.

The Irish FA’s Disciplinary Committee met last night to consider the incident.

In a statement, the IFA said: "The committee have charged both clubs with a breach of Article 33 (spectator misconduct) and Warrenpoint Town goalkeeper Mark Byrne with a breach of Article 17 of the Articles of Association (bringing the game into disrepute) and Article 18.13 (assault or battery of an opponent or other person).

"Neither club has been sanctioned at this stage and the hearing will take place next Wednesday (19 February).

"Both clubs are entitled to challenge the charges – or accept them and any resulting sanctions."

BBC Northern Ireland footage captured punches being thrown during the fracas which saw a fence topple over and fans spill onto the field before calm was eventually restored.

The PSNI also launched its own enquiries alongside the Irish FA.
