Warren Sharp advocates for Dolphins’ new team building philosophies

Warren Sharp of Sharp Football has released analysis on compensatory picks and their value to the team building process. And, given the Dolphins’ new direction in prioritizing the comp pick structure, Sharp figures to be a fan of the Dolphins’ new direction.

The general thought process behind Sharp’s analysis is this: teams can exploit the comp pick process by retaining their own players before the contract in question expires and allocating as many draft picks as possible by onboarding and subsequently letting players with value on the open market walk, hence maximizing your lottery tickets in a “somewhat random game” of drafting talent.

“Don’t overpay other team’s players in free agency and do try to accumulate more draft picks.”

Gee, does that sound familiar? Miami balked at giving Teddy Bridgewater a $16M base salary and giving Trey Flowers $19M average per season. Good, according to Sharp.

So, too, was letting Ja’Wuan James walk and not getting caught up in the bidding war that ensued.

The end result? Miami is poised to nearly match the total number of compensatory picks that they’ve received in the last five years (two this year vs. three since 2015, all in the 2017 NFL Draft).
