Warren Gatland Q&A: What disappointed me most and what we need to fix for next week

Question: Warren, your unbeaten run is over, does that dent your momentum?

Warren Gatland: It’s disappointing, but it’s not something that we’ll dwell on.

It’s about what we take out of today, the things we need to work on and address.

There are some positives as well and it’s about making sure next week is an improvement on today.

Q: What’s the latest on Gareth Anscombe?

WG: I’ve spoken to the physios. He’s got to get a scan.

If it’s just a strain of the ligament, he’ll be out for a few weeks. We’ll know more details after the scan.

Q: Is that the benefit of naming your squad later?

WG: I wouldn’t want to be naming my squad on Monday, I can tell you that.

We’ve got a few more games together and a few more weeks of training.

Q: Is Justin Tipuric okay?

WG: He just slightly rolled his ankle. I don’t think it’s an issue.

Q: Did England show you how much you need these games?

WG: I think so. We went into the Six Nations with a strategy against England and we implemented that pretty well and were effective.

Today we played differently and tried to work things out. England did what they’re good at.

Their scrum was excellent, they drove the lineouts well and they were pretty direct in the way they played.

We’ve got some things to tidy up on to negate that. They’ve scored a try from our errors.

We need to be more accurate in attack. We addressed a few things and I thought we were a lot better in the second half.

We think those things are pretty fixable. To stop them getting momentum at driven lineouts is something we’ll work on this week, the scrum as well.

That’s 90 per cent of their game. We understand that and we’ll be a lot better.

Q: You would have been officially No.1 in the world if you’d won today, was that spoken about?

WG: Not really. I think some people mentioned it yesterday.

It’s a nice accolade but the biggest prize is a couple of months away in Japan.

Whoever wins the World Cup is the No.1 in the world.

Q: What did you make of how your team tried to solve the problems England caused you?

WG: They started to work on it well. The disappointing thing was the try on half time from the overthrow.

We got back into the game at 24-19 and I thought we were going to win from there.

We started creating a lot of momentum and I was pleased with that. If you go in 14-7 down and you score first after half time, it just changes the whole complexion of the game.

We need to look at ourselves in terms of a few penalties we gave away around the fringes, giving up soft three points.

After a poor start, we got into the speed of the game and we were able to impose ourselves.

I was disappointed with that first-half with too many turnovers, we just didn’t keep possession for long enough periods to create the momentum we needed.

One of the stats were that every time we made a break, the result of the next ruck was either we scored or a turnover.

We need to be a little bit better there and I’m sure we will be.

Q: How is Tomos Williams?

WG: He’s being scanned on Monday.

Q: Clean bill of health otherwise?

WG: Pretty much. I think Beard has a bit of a wrist strain but he’s had an x-ray and that’s been cleared.

Q: Is the plan still to go fully-loaded next week?

WG: Yep. That’s the plan.
