Warren Gatland nominated for World Rugby coach of the year 2019

Wales coach Warren Gatland has been nominated for the coach of year award at the Rugby World Cup.

He has been joined in the shortlist by South African coach Rassie Eramus, New Zealand's Steve Hansen, England's Eddie Jones and Japan's Jamie Joseph.

The winner will be announced the day after the final on Sunday, November 3 at the World Rugby Awards in Tokyo.

If he were to win it would be a fitting end to Gatland's career with Wales.

He leaves his post after tomorrow’s Rugby World Cup bronze medal match against the All Blacks in Tokyo.

It will bring the curtain down on the Gatland era, during which Wales have won three Grand Slams and a further Six Nations Championship, making the semi-finals of the World Cup on two occasions.

But Eddie Jones must be favourite after his team steamrolled reigning champions New Zealand 19-7 and moved themselves into first place in the global rankings.

Wales have also been nominated for team of the year alongside England, New Zealand, South Africa and Japan.

The shortlists were drawn up by a panel comprising former internationals Maggie Alphonsi, Brian O'Driscoll and Agustin Pichot and former coaches Nick Mallett and Clive Woodward.
