Warren Gatland insists Wales have forgotten how to lose as England coach Eddie Jones laments fine margins

Wales coach Warren Gatland said his side have proved they have forgotten how to lose as they secured a record 12th straight victory with a 21-13 win over England at a bouncing Principality Stadium.

Wales recovered from a 10-3 half-time deficit to record their first Championship win over England since 2013 and Gatland believes his team can still improve.

He also questioned whether “when it’s really mattered England could win those games” and said England prop Kyle Sinckler, who was withdrawn after 57 minutes, has some “demons” to deal with. Of Sinckler, Jones said “he’s a young player on the way up, look after him”.

“We went through some pain in terms of how hard we trained this week,” said Gatland. “The message to the players was that there was no way anyone else was training that hard. That paid dividends.

“We said before we left the hotel today that we would win today because we have forgotten how to lose."

Still, Gatland refused to be drawn on whether his team were now among the favourites for this year’s World Cup, saying: “We are quite happy to come under the radar. We are not talking ourselves up.”

England coach Eddie Jones – who still harbours hopes of winning the Six Nations – was calm in defeat.

“Very good tough game of rugby, a real nip and tuck game, and decided on fine margins,” he said. “They beat us in the air, and the penalty count lopsided. In those games that’s decisive.

“The world hasn’t ended, we will learn from today, we will improve on those and be ready to go next time.

“It [the atmosphere] always does [plays a part]. That’s why you have home and away. You have to be good enough to cope with it, today we weren’t and there’s no embarrassment about that.”
