Warren Gatland and Wales staff set for Guinness fuelled weekend away after World Cup

Warren Gatland may have a frosty rugby relationship with some in Ireland - but it will be the country he and his fellow Welsh coaches will head off to for the mother of all leaving parties after the World Cup.

The New Zealander has ruffled a few feathers in the Emerald Isle following his controversial exit as Ireland coach back in 2001.

There was a spat with star flanker Sean O'Brien in the wake of the 2017 drawn Lions series in New Zealand and more recently Gatland took a barrage of criticism from former Ireland back-rower Alan Quinlan following Wales' World Cup warm-up defeat in Dublin.

But with the Welsh coaching team ending 12 years at the Test helm at the culmination of the Japan tournament, assistant boss Rob Howley has lifted the lid on the swansong planned after heading back from the Far East.

He told the Daily Mail: "The week after the tournament, we’re going over to Ireland as a management team for a little bit of a swansong.

"A long weekend in Dublin, Guinness factory, that sort of thing.

"That’ll be the last time and we’ll shed a tear, but good things come to an end.

"I’m mindful that it’s my last time with Wales, but my sole focus is being the best I can be between now and the World Cup final.

"The one thing we’ve always done, in victory at least, is enjoy ourselves.

"As a coaching group – Gats, Shaun, Neil, Robin – we’ve become like an extended family. The players see that and that’s powerful.

"We spend probably 22 weeks of the year together, with the World Cup coming, I only managed to spend four days with my family in Portugal this summer.

"The wives and the girlfriends are relaxed in each others’ company and this makes life much easier.

"As coaches, we have been very close for a long time and I that’s the bedrock of our foundation. When we win, we get to have a few celebratory beers together! Simple as!"
