Warning: Wild elephants crossing

KANCHANABURI: Motorists travelling the Ban Pha On-Thong Pha Phum route are warned to drive with caution as a herd of wild elephants is often seen crossing the road in Thong Pha Phum district.

A video clip showing a herd of about 34 elephants crossing the road in a forested area at Ban Pha On of tambon Khanun, Thong Pha Phum district, was posed on “Wild Elephants of Huay Khayeng in Thong Phaphum’’ Facebook page. It was taken by a member of Thong Pha Phum wild elephant watch team.

The team warned local residents and tourists using Ban Pha On-Thong Pha Phum route to take extra caution, particularly at night.

Motorists are advised to stop their vehicle if they come across wild elephants crossing the road. They should refrain from honking the horn as that could put them in danger.

Officials said the herd lives in a forest area between Nong Daeng monastery centre at Village Moo 2 in tambon Tha Khanum and Ban Pha On and often crosses the road around 5pm and returns to the forest later that night.

It is believed food and water in their forest area have been depleted by drought and the animals are forced to forage on the cleared land on the other side of the road.
