Warning to Wishaw residents over new "Wishaw Health Centre" scam

A warning has been given to Wishaw residents after a report of scammers pretending to be from “Wishaw Health Centre” was exposed on social media.

The scam involves crooks pretending to be from the Houldsworth Centre asking customers to open their doors for pharmacy staff.

The alarm was raised by Overtown Pharmacy who posted on their Facebook page over the weekend.

The pharmacy’s post states: “We have been made aware that residents in the local area are being telephoned by individuals pretending to be from Wishaw Health Centre to ask customers to leave open their doors for pharmacy delivery staff.

“This is a scam, if you are contacted in this way phone the police on 101.

“Overtown Pharmacy would not ask any customers to leave their doors open or unlocked.”

The scam is the latest since the coronavirus pandemic hit our shores.

Earlier this month, a Craigneuk pensioner warned locals to be on the lookout for scammers posing as Good Samaritans.

The man contacted the Wishaw Press after the crook appeared at his door on Monday, March 30, wanting to do his shopping for him but wanted the cash up front.

North Lanarkshire Council’s Trading Standards Service also advised residents to be aware of scams and retailers hiking prices amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Emer Shepherd, general manager, Health & Social Care Services Wishaw locality, said: “We have been made aware of reports of a scam involving individuals pretending to be from the Houldsworth Centre, asking local residents to leave their doors open for pharmacy delivery staff.

“I can confirm that no staff from Houldsworth would ask local residents to do this. We would therefore ask anyone who is contacted to call the police on 101.

“Further details on protecting yourself from scams and reporting scams can be found on the Citizens Advice Scotland website.”
