Warning to visitors after wildfire at Perthshire beauty spot

Visitors to Perth and Kinross are being urged not to light campfires unless they have permission from the landowner.

Perth and Kinross Council and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) are warning people of the dangers posed by fires and also disposable barbecues.

It comes after the mainly volunteer crew at Kinloch Rannoch Community Fire Station were called out to a wildfire on the shore of Loch Rannoch.

A post on social media showing the blackened grass said: “We would prefer if you exercise common sense and don’t have any fire when it’s as dry as this.”

According to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, stoves should always be used rather than open fires.

Access rights only apply to responsible access takers who must ‘leave no trace’ including removing all the burnt waste from fires once they have cooled down and it is safe to do so.

The code adds that if an open fire is built, it should be kept small, under control and always supervised.

People must not light open fires during prolonged dry periods or in areas such as forests, farmland or on peaty ground.

Fires must not be located near buildings or in cultural heritage sites where damage can be easily caused.

Never leave a fire unattended and always have a means to extinguish the fire on hand in case of an emergency.

It is also important to avoid lighting fires when high winds, high temperatures and low humidity are present or predicted.

Watch commander of the SFRS Campbell Sands said: “Fire can destroy a tent in less than 60 seconds, and I would urge people to follow the SFRS Tent Safety tips.”

Warnings can be found by visiting the firescotland.gov.uk website.
