Warning to Virgin broadband users as millions urged to reboot WIFI or miss free upgrade

Millions or Virgin Media customers are being urged to reboot their routers or risk missing a free upgrade.

Earlier this week, the broadband company announced it would be releasing an upgrade to boost internet users' upload speeds. While the update is currently being rolled out, it will only kick in after a full system reset, which takes seconds to do.

The upgrade will allow internet users who upload files, send emails with attachments and post videos to platforms like YouTube at a much faster rate, the Mirror reports. Virgin bosses hope the change will offer customers a more supportive and enjoyable service.

After switching the broadband modem off and on, customers with M500 or Gig1 plans will see their speeds increase without paying extra. Those with either package need to follow some simple steps to make sure the upgrade goes through.

The tech giant has confirmed that M500 speed has boosted from 36Mbps to 52Mbps. Meanwhile the average upload speed for Gig 1 services will rise to six times faster than UK average from 52Mbps to 104Mbps.

Customers who are eligible for the increase simply need to reboot their Hub by switching it off, waiting five to ten seconds and switching it on again, or restarting it via the Virgin Media Connect app.

Once completed, customers can also check their new upload speeds by running a speed test on the Connect app. It’s worth remembering that a full reboot can take around five minutes so only attempt it when nobody needs to use the web.

Speaking about the changes, Gareth Turpin, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “As demand for fast and reliable connectivity continues to soar, we’re boosting upload speeds for millions of our broadband customers at no extra cost.

"In the last year, we’ve seen record upstream demand on our fixed network as a result of more people regularly working from home, using video calling apps and new advances in gaming, so now more than ever we’re laser focused on offering our customers a service that supports them now and in the future.”
