Warning to tourists after '35 more' Indian covid cases found in Wales holiday resorts

People who visited seaside holiday resorts over the Bank Holiday weekend should book coronavirus tests due to an 'outbreak' of Indian covid cases.

The caution from health officials comes after dozens of new cases of the Indian variant of concern were found in two coastal areas of Wales.

Wales Online reports that Public Health Wales confirmed that 35 confirmed or presumptive cases of the variant, first identified in India (VOC-21APR-02), are in Llandudno Junction, Llandudno and Penrhyn Bay areas of north Wales.

Public Health Wales, Conwy County Borough Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board are urging people living in those areas to be alert for coronavirus symptoms and to take a test as soon as possible even if they have no symptoms.

The discovery of more than 30 cases follows 18 cases being discovered in the region on Friday (May 28) meaning the total number now stands at 53.

Conwy county now has the second highest Covid infection rate in Wales.

Richard Firth, consultant in health protection for Public Health Wales, and chair of the multi-agency incident management team, said: "This is a fast-moving situation. Please be vigilant for the symptoms of coronavirus and get a test now.

"The emergence of so many new cases of this transmissible new variant of coronavirus in the Llandudno Junction, Llandudno and Penrhyn Bay areas is a reminder that we should not become complacent, even as rates of the virus across Wales remain low.

"Speed is of the essence. The sooner we act, the better, so please, come forward for testing as soon as you can.

"The more people with symptoms who come forward, the more cases we will find. More people can then be referred into the Test, Trace, Protect programme, allowing contact tracers to take action to put a stop to the spread of this variant in the area.

“If you are contacted by contact tracers, please help to protect your community by being honest with them about your movements and complying with their instructions."
