Warning to stay away from Wales as people travel from England to climb Snowdon

Police are urging people not to breach coronavirus restrictions by travelling from England to Wales to climb Snowdon.

Wales is currently in a Tier 4 lockdown and has been since December 19, with rules only relaxed on Christmas Day.

Currently only essential travel is permitted and this does not include entering Wales from England where areas are also under strict restrictions.

Officers from North Wales Police reported visitors travelling from as far as Southampton, Kent and Solihull in England on Friday - all which are currently in Tier 4, North Wales Live reports.

Those restrictions state that people must stay local and not leave their home or make any non-essential journeys without "reasonable excuse".

On Saturday police continued to report people flouting the rules as four men from Essex - another Tier 4 area of England travelled to climb Snowdon.

All four men have been reported for Covid-19 offences, as the force urged everyone to ‘stay home’.

Another driver, who had travelled from “outside the area” to walk up Snowdon according to NWP has had their vehicle towed.

In a tweet, the force said: “Vehicle parked on a clearway on Pen-y-Pass, Llanberis. On a bend. In the snow. An accident waiting to happen

“The owners (who had broken Covid-19 rules and travelled here from outside the area to walk up Snowdon) will now have to pay to have their vehicle released.

Officers are urging everyone to follow the rules while Wales is at Level 4, adding: “All visitors will be welcomed back when it is right and safe to do so.”

Wales entered the level 4 lockdown on December 19 to combat the rise in coronavirus cases. Until the situation is reviewed later this month, only essential travel is permitted.

Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething has also slammed those flouting restrictions, claiming some local residents were being "irresponsible" and that most people breaking the rules "are actually from Wales".
