Warning to O2 and Virgin Mobile customers as they face £48 price hike

Some mobile phone customers will see their bills increase this year as the cost of living crisis continues.

O2 and Virgin Mobile merged last year and now some pay-monthly customers face a price increase of as much as £48.

The price rises will come into force on April 1 but exactly by how much will depend on what network you are with, the type of contract you have and when you joined the network.

This increase of up to 11.7% is calculated in the retail price index of inflation, the Mirror reports.

An O2 spokesperson said: “We recognise price changes are never welcome, and always balance keeping our prices competitive with the need to continue investing in the services that our customers use and love.

“For most customers the price increase only applies to the airtime part of their bill and with our most popular tariffs costing from as little as 33p per day for superfast data with unlimited minutes and texts, our customers receive incredible value as well as extra perks such as Priority.”

O2 customers who joined after March 25 last year will face the full 11.7% price hike, which will see as much as £48 a year added to your bill.

For those who joined before March 25 last year, your price increase will be capped at just the rate of RPI inflation, which is 7.8%.

Customers who are on an O2 Refresh tariff - where you have separate device and airtime bills - will only see the hike added to the airtime part of their plan.

However, O2 told The Mirror its customers don't have a right to cancel as a result of this price change, as it was all outlined to them at point of sale.

For Virgin Mobile customers, every single one will see their bill rise with the full 11.7% increase regardless of when they signed up.

Again, it will only affect your airtime tariff - your device plan will remain unaffected.

Virgin told the Mirror it wrote to customers back in January to warn them about the price hike, changing their T&Cs allowing them the right to exit without penalty.
