Warning to Northern Rail customers ahead of Grand Final weekend

Train service Northern Rail have issued a warning for travelling rugby fans using their services this weekend.

Saturday will see St Helens face Catalan Dragons in the Rugby League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected to travel to and from the game by train.

Because of this, train services from St Helens towards Manchester are expected to be much busier than usual.

With the game scheduled to finish at around 8pm, there will be a limited number of trains from Manchester stations back towards St Helens and the train operators are calling on rugby league fans to plan ahead.

Northern have also confirmed that Deansgate Station in Manchester will be closed to customers from 6pm Saturday.

Northern have suggested fans should consider alternate routes on Saturday.

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, said: “The Grand Final is a fantastic occasion and, after a season sponsoring Super League, it’s great to be able to help so many fans get to and from the showpiece match.

“We will have plenty of trains operating through the day to get fans to Manchester, but there will be a limited number after the game with only four Northern trains operating from Manchester Oxford Road and three from Manchester Victoria.”
