Warning to motorists as woman rushed to hospital following A370 crash

An elderly woman had to be rushed to hospital following a smash which closed the main route between Bristol and Weston-super-Mare.

The A370 was shut for more than two-and-half-hours after the three-vehicle collision today (Monday).

Firefighters have now warned motorists to drive steady as more rain is set to batter the area, creating dangerous road conditions.

The smash happened near the junction to Puxton Lane and Old Weston Road at around 11.45am.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 11:54, crews from Weston and Yatton fire station were mobilised to a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on the A370 in Hewish.

"One female casualty in her 80s was walked from the vehicle by paramedics and conveyed to hospital. Crews remained on scene to make the vehicles and scene safe."

Firefighters based in Weston tweeted: "Busy mornings work for #greenwatchweston and @AFRSYatton at an RTC, a warning to stay steady and safe on wet roads."

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: "South Western Ambulance Service was called at around 11.45am about a three-vehicle collision on the A370 Bristol Road.

"Our crews assessed two patients at the scene and have transported them to hospital by land ambulance."
