Warning to lock up locked-down caravans

CARAVAN and motorhome owners are being warned to protect against thieves and vandals during the coronavirus restrictions.

Specialist insurer Caravan Guard and stolen vehicle recovery expert Tracker have pointed out that most thefts occur while leisure vehicles are in storage and unused for long periods.

Tracker’s security tips include fitting security posts or a locked gate if the vehicle is parked on your drive, security marking it and fitting one of its devices to increase the chance of recovery. You can also make life difficult for crooks by fitting hitch locks, wheel clamps, steering wheel locks and door deadlocks.

Valuables should be removed if possible or else marked, along with interior fitments, with your postcode. And don’t leave registration documents on board as this can help thieves sell on a caravan.

Liz Harrison, of Caravan Guard, said: “We know how disappointing it is to be unable to hit the open road. But owners must remember that their pride and joy is still vulnerable and must be protected.”

Tracker’s Clive Wain added: “While the extended lockdown increases the risk of caravan theft, there are plenty of ways in which owners can protect themselves and their vehicle. Security and insurance are both vital, and neither should fall down the list of priorities this summer.”
