Warning to Irish holidaymakers after 'serious issues' found with popular travel adapters

Irish holidaymakers have been warned after several popular travel adapters were recalled for "serious issues" including a risk of suffering an electric shock.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued the warning to consumers in Ireland concerning three products, one sold in Harvey Norman, one bought from Amazon and another available in several retail outlets.

The CCPC said: "Our product safety experts tested a number of adaptors sold in Ireland and found some serious issues.

They advised consumers to check the list of recalls of these unsafe products that have been withdrawn from the market.

JDM Products Limited is carrying out a recall of G&BL Universal Multitravel Adapter, purchased in Harvey Norman in Ireland, from which 1,222 affected products in the Republic of Ireland have been purchased. Consumers have been asked to no longer use it.

"The product presents a risk of electric shock as the shutters of the adaptor are absent for the Australian socket system on the adaptor, which may cause the user to access live parts (e.g. the pin) and receive an electric shock," the warning states.

The brand is G&BL. The type/number of model is Art. 6769. The bar code is 8011884067692. The batch number is unknown.

Homeline has recalled the Homesafe Universal USB Travel Adaptor manufactured from 2021 to 2022, of which 6,040 affected products in the Republic of Ireland have been purchased from various retailers.

"The product presents a risk of electric shock. The socket shutters can be opened without a plug being inserted making live parts accessible. The brand is Homesafe. The type/number of model is MMTA01/JL153. The batch number is BT1887. The barcode is 5391529360023," the warning says.

The third product safety notice is from the WELLY enjoy IT universal travel adapter sold on the Amazon platform, with 50 affected products bought in Ireland.

"The risk presented by the product is electric shock. During normal use, the US pin breaks off and stays in the socket. When trying to get the US pin out of the socket with their fingers, the user suffers an electric shock," the warning says.

Customers have been asked to immediately discontinue and discard the product.

The brand is WELLY enjoy IT. The type/number of model is WY13100. The ASIN number is B07DRP4NND. The barcode is 8054392613845.

The CCPC has offered a number of safety tips to avoid the dangers associated with travel adapters when holidaying this summer:

1. Use only in the countries listed on the product, its packaging or accompanying safety information.

2. Always plug the appliance into the travel adaptor first, before inserting the travel adaptor into the socket.

3. Don’t overload the adaptor: it’s designed for short-term use only, with low energy consumption devices, not as a replacement for a domestic socket.

4. Unplug the adaptor when you’re finished using it, when you’re leaving the house or your accommodation, and when you’re going to sleep.
