Warning to holidaymakers as travel company's computer is hacked

Customers and staff of cruise operator Carnival may have had their personal details stolen, the company has warned after it discovered a hack of its computers.

Carnival said that some of its files had been downloaded during a ransomware attack that got into an encrypted part of its IT systems.

Its experts believe the hackers had access to personal data of both guests and employees and warned it may face legal claims. It has hired lawyers and informed law enforcement.

Carnival, which runs P&O Cruises and Cunard, said: “On August 15 2020 Carnival … detected a ransomware attack that accessed and encrypted a portion of one brand’s information technology systems. The unauthorised access also included the download of certain of our data files.”

It added: “We expect that the security event included unauthorised access to personal data of guests and employees, which may result in potential claims from guests, employees, shareholders or regulatory agencies.”
