Warning to GCSE and A level pupils taking exams this year, from First Minister Mark Drakeford

Students sitting exams this year have been told to focus on getting good grades in coursework and mocks.

According to First Minister Mark Drakeford, these are very likely to be drawn upon if the exam period in May is disrupted by coroanvirus.

Last academic year all exams were cancelled with students given predicted grades by their teachers.

Both the Welsh and UK Governments used an algorithm which downgraded many promising students' grades. This led to an embarrassing u-turn where all students were eventually given their predicted grades.

Other countries managed to avoid this by relying on coursework and previous assessments. You can read more about how other nations managed the problem here.

In an interview with WalesOnline over the weekend Mr Drakeford was asked what students in years 11 and 13 should expect from examinations this year.

He said: "If you are in that position you should be looking out for the results of the group we have put together to give advice on this. Concentrate on your coursework because that could count for more than it does in other circumstances.

"Think carefully about [mock exams] because they might count towards your final result if it's not possible to run conventional exams again. We plan in this scenario to draw on a wider range of evidence of a young person's performance and ability over the year than we were able to in the circumstances last year."

The First Minister added that it was the Welsh Government's plan to have exams as normal but that circumstances could change that.

"Our aim is to get back to the way people used to have their work assessed for exams and coursework," he said. "But things move so fast I don't think you could guarantee it."
