Warning to Facebook users over new steps which could leave them locked out of their pages

Facebook is advising some users that they could be locked from their accounts as they take steps to try to stop cyber attacks.

The popular platform is used by both businesses and individuals but the new measures are only aimed at those who would be worst hit if their account was hacked.

The social media giant is now introducing additional security measures for potential victims, reports the Liverpool Echo.

These will include getting help from Facebook which will check out how much at risk their accounts are and what needs to be done to make them more secure.

It is understood help will be given to those people whose accounts are thought to be most vulnerable.

According to the Liverpool Echo Facebook said it is trying to safeguard accounts with "the potential to reach a lot more people than an average Facebook user" from "targeted attacks".

Hackers, Facebook said, are "often motivated to attack accounts that have a lot of followers, run important pages or hold some community significance".

"Facebook Protect" has been designed to allow people with such accounts to implement stronger security tools.

Users will also have their accounts checked for vulnerabilities, and help to resolve them.

Those who are eligible for the new measures will be prompted through the app, and via email.

A warning message within emails reveals anyone who is prompted and does not opt in risks being locked out of their account.

No action is required unless you get a notification that you’re eligible to enrol.

Facebook Protect is expected to be rolled out globally, with additional security steps being put in place.

All admins of Facebook pages will be required to go through publishing authorisations to ensure the page's security.

Page publishing authorisation asks people who manage these pages to secure their accounts with two-factor authentication and confirm their primary country locations.
