Warning to drivers as petrol stations at Morrisons, Shell, PB, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's to change

Petrol stations are set to roll out E10, a new standard petrol grade this summer.

It is part of the government's environmental plans.

E10 will reduce the overall levels of C02 in vehicle emissions, the Liverpool Echo reports.

While E10 is compatible with almost all (95%) petrol-powered vehicles on the road today, including all cars built since 2011, ageing vehicles, of which there are around 700,000 in the UK, should not use it.

Instead, they will have to use super-unleaded petrol, known as E5.

According to iNews, this currently costs around 11p a litre more than standard petrol - around £7.50 extra each time you fill up at the station.

The following vehicles may not be compatible with E10 fuel:

  • classic, cherished and older vehicles
  • some specific models, particularly those from the early 2000s
  • some mopeds, particularly those with an engine size of 50cc or under

You can check if your car, motorbike or moped can use E10 petrol by using the Government's E10 compatibility checker.

E10 fuel will be available at almost all petrol stations across the UK. Petrol stations that offer two grades of petrol will stock both E10 (‘Premium’) and E5 (‘Super’) petrol.

Filling stations will clearly label petrol as either E10 or E5.

The change in fuel only applies to petrol; diesel fuel will not be changing.
