Warning to drivers as number plate changes come into effect from March 1

Drivers will need to be aware of new changes coming into place as from next month.

From March 1, two new rules of the road impacting car number plates will come into play.

After this date, cars registered will be given a 22 tag rather than the current 71.

Further number plates will be released in September with a new “72-plate” and will apply to any new vehicle registered until February 28, 2023.

Two tone plates that used different shades to create a 3D or 4D effect will also be banned, with number plates now only being allowed to display solid black lettering.

The lettering can still be Perspex or acrylic lettering, provided it meets all other requirements.

According to travel and traffic experts, this is so that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be able to read the plate more easily.

The new number plates will also have to include the supplier’s business name and postcode, along with the name of the number plate manufacturer and the new standard.

Any new number plates made after next month will be made from a new, tougher material which will reportedly be more resistant to damage and abrasion.
