Warning to drivers as mangled wreck shows dangers of bad weather

Drivers are being urged to take extra precautions as they hit the road this week after a serious accident left a car 'wrapped around a lamppost' on a motorway.

Weather conditions were poor over the weekend with flash flooding and low visibility as well as high winds.

The forecast is for continued deterioration with the temperature set to drop, wind speeds to increase and more heavy rain coming - with flood warnings in places.

Police shared this image of a crash which closed part of the M62 over the weekend. The driver survived the crash but was hospitalised with serious injuries,  Manchester Evening News reports.

The M62 was closed in both directions while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Highways England warned drivers to take care during the wet weather.

People commented on how lucky the driver was to survive. Gary tweeted: "One very lucky driver to survive the impact."

Callum Sutcliffe said: "Lucky to get out of that alive", while Linda tweeted: "Not sure I've ever seen anything literally wrapped around a post before."
