Warning to drivers after two small mistakes cause 'enormous' explosion inside car

A driver caused an explosion in his car when he lit a cigarette having sprayed 'excessive' amounts of air freshener in his motor.

Spray from the aerosol ignited when he lit and caused a huge explosion which blew out the windscreen, buckled the doors and damaged windows on nearby offices.

Miraculously the driver, who has been identified, escaped the blast with minor injuries.

Police said the incident Saturday "could've been worse" and warned people to follow safety advice.

The motorist was in stationary traffic in Halifax, West Yorkshire, when the explosion happened.

It was so powerful it caused damage to windows at nearby businesses.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the "dramatic" incident was "excessive" air freshener use.

One eyewitness took to Twitter after the explosion and described it as an "enormous bang".

Craig Chew-Moulding wrote: "A car explosion in Halifax town centre. What an enormous bang! I was in an adjacent bar.

"Unbelievably the driver just climbed out. Thankfully there appears to be no injuries."

The road was closed while an investigation was carried out by police and the fire service.
