Warning to dog owners after suspicious raw meat found lying near River Kelvin

Dog owners in the west end of Glasgow are being advised to be on their guard following the discovery of suspicious meat in a popular dog-walking area next to the River Kelvin.

The incident occurred yesterday afternoon (Thursday, October 3) when a member of the public found a lump of raw mince lying in the grass near between Kelvinbridge tube station and Gibson Street.

Writer Ryan Vance, who made the discovery, tweeted: "PSA dog owners of Glasgow West End - found a very suspicious lump of raw mince just lying in the grass near Kelvinbridge. It’s in the bin now. Given the poisoning of dogs in Queen’s Park earlier this year with antifreeze-laced food, be vigilant!"

The find comes in the wake of similar discoveries in recent months, with dog biscuits laced with nails found in the Anderston area back in March and May of this year and reports of dogs ingesting poison in Alexandra Park in the east end around the same time.

Speaking to Glasgow Live following a spate of incidents earlier this year, Scottish SPCA chief superintendent Mike Flynn said: “We deal with a large number of complaints regarding this issue each year as the poisoning of domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, is a huge issue.

“Dog and cat owners should be vigilant and if they suspect that their animal has ingested something poisonous and should take them to the vet immediately.

“People can report any concerns about intentional poisoning to our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
