Warning to check your bank after petrol payments taken months late

Drivers are being urged to check their bank accounts after payments for fuel have been taken months after the purchase thanks to a glitch.

The Money Saving Expert website has found a number of customers who have just been charged for petrol they bought as far back as October.

The problem is down to a glitch at Tesco filling stations, and has hit payments for a small number of drivers using credit or debit cards between October and December, reports the Daily Record.

Some have found money for the fuel they bought last autumn has only just been withdrawn from their bank accounts.

One driver took to Twitter to call the move 'disgusting ... especially when you don’t have the funds available'.

Another said they had been emailed by Tesco to warn the money was about to be taken out of their account, writing: "I don’t even have the money in the bank. I don't even recall filling up by that amount around then!”

Helen Knapman, assistant news and investigations editor at MoneySavingExpert.com, said: "It's unacceptable of Tesco to hit people with payments months down the line.

"If you're operating on a tight budget and you're suddenly hit with an unexpected bill it can be a disaster financially, and there's a real risk some shoppers will have racked up bank charges as a result. If you've been charged by your bank, make sure you claim the money back from Tesco."

A statement from Tesco given to Money Saving Expert said: "We appreciate this may be inconvenient for some customers and we are very sorry to anyone affected by this."
