Warning to Apple iPhone owners as millions urged to install urgent update

If you use an older Apple device you should urgently download the latest update as you may be vulnerable to hackers.

The American tech giant has identified a number of bugs, including one which has a 'zero-day' rating. This rating means that hackers are aware of the flaw and are actively exploiting it.

Those with affected devices, which includes the iPhone 7 and iPhone SE, should immediately go to settings and download an update called iOS 15.7.4, reports the Mirror.

According to Apple, the bugs could allow hackers to "access user-sensitive data", "execute arbitrary code" and "access information about a user’s contacts."

"Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution," said the company. "Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited."

Essentially, the vulnerabilities could allow a malicious app to execute code which could steal data such as photos, location and private messages if downloaded.

The update impacts the following Apple devices:

  • iPhone 6s (all models)
  • iPhone 7 (all models)
  • iPhone SE (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad Air 2 and later
  • iPad 5th generation and later
  • iPad mini 4 and later
  • iPod touch (7th generation)

Those with newer devices that are up-to-date with IOS releases should be safe as Apple introduced a patch for all of the bugs mentioned above back in February.

How to check for IOS updates

All you have to do is head to Settings > General then tap Software Update . Here you should see any pending upgrades that Apple has released to your device.

Just make sure your phone has more than 50 percent charge and is linked to Wi-Fi as Apple's iOS updates are usually large and so can eat into your mobile data allowance.
