Warning to anyone with an HSBC account as scammers target customers

Increasing numbers of scams have been reported during the pandemic and HSBC customers have become the latest target for fraudsters.

Criminals are sending scam texts in an attempt to gain access to financial information.

The texts claim to be from the bank and alert the recipient of a new payee on their account.

HSBC bank has confirmed this is a scam.

The text message reads: "HSBC: A payment to MR/MRS [insert name] has been attempted on [insert date] at [insert time]. If this was NOT you, please visit:"

The message then provides a link, which is made to look like it will direct you to the bank's security team. The URL link actually goes to a fraudulent page, where unsuspecting victims are asked to give banking details as the scammers attempt to gain enough information to access their bank account and funds.

HSBC has said you should delete the text, stressing that you should not click on the link in any circumstances.

This is a UK wide scam and follows similar attempts by fraudsters to access the accounts of other high street banks.

HSBC warned: "If you've received a text message that looks like it may have come from HSBC, have a look [on the bank's official website for examples of text they would send] to see if it really did come from us."

"Criminals have become very sophisticated in enticing you to click on links or call phone numbers that belong to them.

"They pretend to be an organisation you trust, like your bank, utility company, internet provider or even the police or HMRC."

The bank advised: "If in doubt, don't respond - call us on the normal number on the back of your card."
