Warning package holidays could 'double in price' due to new rules

Those hoping for a summer holiday have been handed a glimmer of hope after a top European politician said she believed it "can be done safely".

However, according to some experts breaks could cost as much as £1,000 a head due to social distancing requirements.

Last week, European Commission vice president Margrethe Vestager said she hoped Britons could travel abroad for a break.

But even if we are able to travel, experts suggest package holidays could double in price once the lockdown ends.

Martyn James, of consumer website Resolver, said: “It’s likely the cost of overseas package deals will double. Even when they [customers] get to their hotel, there will be no buffet and all kinds of limitations around the pool.”

Aviation expert Matt Purton said if airlines have to block middle seats for safety, consumers could expect to see a 30 per cent price rise, reports the Mirror.

Low-cost airlines could also face further woe if businesses opt for online conference calls rather than face-to-face meetings around the globe.

Paul Charles, of The PC Agency travel consultancy, said holiday prices will rise as “airlines will have to make more money from their economy passengers”.

Hotels will also have to up their cleaning budgets and travel insurance premiums could rocket by 20 per cent.

Asked about the prospect of Britons travelling to Europe for a vacation, Ms Vestager told BBC Radio 4's World At One programme: "I would hope so.

"I think that there's discussion over it at every dinner table in Europe and probably also in the UK.

"We really need a break from this. Can we go as we planned, or will we have to stay within the borders of our home country?

"We think that it can be done safely.

"And I think it's a very good sign that Germany said yesterday (Wednesday) that they will open their borders towards France and Austria."
