Warning over strange water in Leeds 'lagoon' as people keep swimming in it

Police have warned of the dangers of visiting a 'steep and slippy' Leeds quarry, where an increasing number of people are meeting their friends for a swim in a lagoon-like pool of water.

West Yorkshire Police 's Leeds East Team said they had received calls about youths swimming in the water at The Old Brickworks in Swillington and causing anti-social behaviour.

A social media post on Friday read: "It is only a matter of time before someone falls and injures themselves."

The approach to the 'lagoon' in the bottom of the quarry is treacherous and the water itself is potentially polluted.

It appears as though that warning went unheeded because a second post today(Monday) revealed the team continued to receive an increasing number of calls on the matter over the weekend.

The second post read: "Staff continue to regularly patrol the area, and we are working with the owners to block off some of the access routes onto the site.

"Please can we remind people that this is not a safe place to play swim meet your friends, some of the route is very steep and slippy and the water level has reduced dramatically.

"As many people have made reference to in our previous postings the water is a very strange colour and is probably polluted."
