Warning over social media copycat photos at NI beauty spots

People are being urged not to put themselves in danger trying to copy social media photos at beauty spots in Northern Ireland.

Coleraine Coastguard were forced to put out the warning after a snap started circulating on social media of a young person sitting on the edge of a 120 foot cliff near the Mussenden Temple.

Alistair Simpson, station officer for Coleraine Coastguard, said that what people didn't see what that the person had climbed over a protective wall to get to the cliff edge.

He said no photo is "worth risking your life for" and urged members of the public not to copy it.

Speaking to Belfast Live, he said: "Our concern is always for the person who is in the picture but we also have concerns about copycats, people who would look at that and think it's a good idea.

"They may think they are safe sitting close to the edge but it does not take much for someone to slip over the edge. There have been occasions around the coast where people have unfortunately lost their lives, people trying to get selfies.

"It is a warning to others, please do not copy their actions."

Alistair said it is possible to get a stunning photo in local beauty spots without hopping over walls and fences which are there to protect the public.

"There's a wall or fence there for a reason," he said.

"It is very close to the edge and you can stand and get a fantastic photo without going over the wall."

Alistair added: "We are not in the business or causing distress to anyone, not in the business of naming and shaming or pointing the finger, it is just a general warning not to copy."

He added that if you see anyone in difficulty or distress along the coast to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
