Warning over TV Licensing email scam which aims to steal bank details

Police are warning members of the public to be aware of a new email scam which aims to steal bank details.

The unsolicited emails look exactly like communications from TV Licensing asking for details to be renewed.

Even though it appears to have the same domain name as the official TV Licensing body it directs victims to a sophisticated phishing site.

Policed Scotland's Forth Valley division said the fraud had been reported to them on Friday, and they are urging people to make friends and family aware of the scam.

The emails say customers must update their details urgently or their TV licence will expire.

Police say: "This email was received yesterday by a Forth Valley resident.

"The link takes you to a fake website, set up to look exactly like the original. The email copies the official sender details (donotreply@tvlicensing.co.uk) and the link directs you to a phishing page.

"The aim is to steal your banking details. Do not click on the link, delete the email.

"If you are in doubt of any unsolicited emails, please visit the official website or make contact through an official number."

Elderly residents in East Lothian were recently targeted by a separate phone scam in which fraudsters pretended to be from HMRC.

Last month Instagram and Snapchat users were targeted by an extortion scam which threatened to reveal personal photos.
