A fake police phone scam that threatens to steal hundreds of pounds is reportedly targeting people on Merseyside.
The scam involves a call from a mobile number, with the person on the other end claiming to be from police, saying they are on the way to your house.
Claiming an outstanding council tax debt, the bogus caller then demands a payment of £687 - saying if it isn't paid then they will seize goods to the same value.
The worrying scam calls have targeted a number of numbers in Merseyside, after a bar owner warned others in a local community group.
Posting in Crimewatch Wirral, the man explained what happened when he was targeted by the scammers - with a number of people commenting saying they had also been called by the same number.
His post said: "[They say they are] only 40 mins away and you need to make a payment of £687 or whatever it was online now or they will taking goods to the value of.
"When I asked what it was over I was told council tax and rates which surprisingly you can't check on because offices are shut on a weekend.
"[They say] they are only 35 mins away if you don't make the payment it will go up to £1,000 with a snotty attitude.
"Ignore them - it's a scam and thank you Jules for checking out the number online. It's been reported many times before."
He added: "I will ring police and log it with them. Knew it was lies as I always pay my bills. B******s.
"Left my steak on my lap tray on the floor and dashed to the pub and on my return found the dog had eaten it... great. Just be aware everyone!"
When the ECHO attempted to call the number given in the scam warning, it directed to a GiffGaff voicemail service.
