Warning over fake 'Covid vaccine passport' scam emails asking for bank details

People are being warned not to fall for a fake "coronavirus vaccine passport" scam that asks people for money.

The bogus email claims to come from the NHS and says it will "allow you to travel safely and freely around the world without having to self-isolate" if you've had the jab.

It goes on to state "who is eligible" and asks people to click a button at the bottom of the email to access their "digital passport."

People are being warned not to click the link which will take you to a fake NHS website, asking for personal information and payment details towards "an admin fee."

Scotland has not introduced a 'vaccine passport' system, but people can access their vaccination status records if travelling abroad.

This is free and should not require any payment and can be done online or via the vaccine helpline.

The NHS will never ask you for banking details, passwords, or PIN numbers - and these should serve as instant 'red flags'.

In a statement earlier this year lead officer at Chartered Trading Standards Institute Katherine Hart issued advice about Covid-19 related scams.

She said: "I have been tracking and warning the public about COVID-19-related scams since the beginning of the pandemic, and at every stage of response, unscrupulous individuals have modified their campaigns to defraud the public.

"The vaccine brings great hope for an end to the pandemic and lockdowns, but some only wish to create even further misery by defrauding others.

"The NHS will never ask you for banking details, passwords, or PIN numbers and these should serve as instant red flags.

"Do not provide any information to the scammers, but please also report suspicious messages to Action Fraud, or if in Scotland, Police Scotland, as this provides intelligence and assists authorities in combating scams."
