Warning over fake British Gas refund emails which aim to steal bank details

Fake emails claiming to be from British Gas are being used to target customers in order to steal their bank details.

Police Scotland have warned people to be aware of the phishing scam after a Forth Valley resident was targetted.

The email has a British Gas logo and says the customer is eligible for an "overpayment refund" of a specific amount.

It says: "Our records indicate that you have paid more than you should have for your British Gas Services for 2016-2019 and because of this reason, we have decided to refund you the total amount."

Forth Valley police division urged people to share the warning with relatives who may not be on social media.

British Gas also have advice on how to deal with suspicious emails and websites.
