Warning over fake £20 'movie notes' being used in shops

Fake £20 "movie notes" are being used in shops in the Wirral area.

One woman who works Kelly's Discount Booze on Argyle Street in Birkenhead said a man came into the shop and tried to buy some alcohol with the fake note.

However, the woman told the ECHO that since she has worked at the store for nearly 10 years she can "spot a fake a mile off."

She added she confronted the man about him using the fake note and told him she was keeping it to contact police.

The man reportedly walked out of the store following this.

Speaking to the ECHO, she said: "A gent come in around aged between 40 and 50, wearing all black and a mask.

"He asked for four pints of Stella and tried to pay with this note and I've worked here in Kelly's Discount Booze in Argyle Street, Birkenhead for nearly 10 years and can spot a fake a mile off.

"So as he handed over the note I confronted him with it being a fake and said I was keeping the note to contact police, so he walked out. I then let the local businesses know so their staff were to be alert."

The woman also shared images of the fake £20 notes which have written on them "This is not legal tender, it is to be used for motion props."

Another man also posted in a local Facebook group to warn others, after he said his local chippy on Seaview Road also received two fake £20 notes with the same words written on them in small print.

He added the notes "look just like the new ones."

People also commented that they are "plastic just like the new ones" and there are also fake £50 notes which are similar.
