Warning over disposable BBQs after fire service called to bin fire in Porthcawl

People are being warned to get rid of disposable BBQs properly after fire fighters were called to a bin fire in a Welsh coastal town.

People have been flocking to beaches during the latest heatwave and many of them have been taking picnics or barbecue food with them.

But there are many dangers linked to the kind of disposable BBQs used on beaches, including the fact that one man was hideously burned after standing on the sand where his barbeque previously sa t.

And this weekend fire fighters had to be called to put out a fire in a Porthcawl bin after it caught alight after a disposable BBQ was left there.

The alarm was raised on Sunday evening after the bin melted when the a one-time-use barbecue was thrown away.

Resident Simon Collings posted in local Facebook group Porthcawl First criticising the "wasted resources" needed after the bin started to melt.

The fire took almost 20 minutes to extinguish and the litter bin has been ruined.

A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 8:52pm on Sunday the 18 th of July, we received reports of a refuse fire in Locks Common Road, Porthcawl.

"Crews from Porthcawl station attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"A stop message was received at approximately 9:07pm."
