Warning over Covid complication which left man unable to speak

There are fears coronavirus can cause brain damage in some patients after a number of people experienced symptoms of bleeding and cell death.

A man in Florida temporarily lost the ability to speak after catching Covid-19 and scans suggest a woman in her 50s lost a large area of brain cells.

Similar symptoms have been detected in Italy and China reports The Mirror.

It is thought the coronavirus can cause inflammation in the damage which in turn causes damage.

Henry Ford Health System neurologist Dr Elissa Fory said the complication in the woman who lost brain cells was as "devastating" as severe lung disease.

The 58-year-old was left confused and disoriented by the cell death. A CT scan showed dark spots in her brain and tests proved negative for any other cause. She appeared to have bleeding in her thalmus and temporal lobes.

Testing proved positive for swelling in her brain.

In Florida 74-year-old suffered seizures and was left temporarily unable to speak.

One hospital in Italy has set up a ward specifically for brain injury linked to Covid-19.

The Henry Ford doctors are now urging clinicians across the US to keep an eye out for neurological symptoms as the pandemic continues to spread rapidly.
