Warning over aggressive Edinburgh man who 'lurks' around Dalry asking for cash and offering drugs

A group of people who live in the Dalry and Fountainbridge areas have shared their experiences of what they say is an aggressive panhandler who grabs hold of people, asks for small sums of money and also offers drugs to passers-by.

Writing on Reddit, one person asked: "has anyone encountered this drug dealer in his 40s always comes up to you asking if you want drugs or asking you for money I encountered this **** a few times.

"He harasses folks all the time even if you are on the other side of the road he runs up to you ask for like 20p. So I'm curious if folk on this has encountered him?"

People responded with their own experiences of the man. One person said:

"Dear god, I think I know the guy you mean. Think he has black hair and usually a black possibly leather jacket? I always used to see him on the way to work. At least on a weekly basis.

"Always had to tell him I don't do any drugs and yet he'd try again sometimes the very next day. Last time I saw him he properly doubled back a big ass distance just to ask me for change. Kept telling him I didn't even have my wallet on me and he kept getting more insistent. Then he left completely offended that I didn't give him the money that I didn't have on me."

Another said that the man had 'grabbed' their arm.

Police Scotland say: "It is not an offence to beg in a public place. However if a beggar behaves in an intimidating or aggressive manner they may commit a breach of the peace."

Shelter Scotland say: "The UK is the fifth richest country in the world and yet there are still people who feel they have no choice but to take to the streets to beg. Most people do not beg because it's an easy option. For many they may beg because they are unable to access help."
