Warning on text scam that tries to trick you into handing over Bank of Ireland account details

The public has been warned over a text scam that tries to trick you into handing over details about your bank account.

It has been sent to hundreds of phone users in recent days, in an attempt to access personal information.

It claims to have been sent from Bank of Ireland, but the bank advises:

Bank of Ireland will never

  • send you a link directly to the login page of our online banking channels
  • ask you for your full 6-digit PIN (we only ever ask you to confirm 3 random digits)
  • ask you to transfer money out of your account to protect you from fraud

The suspected scam text reads: "Dear, your BOI account has been frozen because we have been unable to validate your information."

It then tells the text receiver to check a website to "avoid suspension".

But the text has been received by people who do not, and never have had, a Bank of Ireland account.

They are being sent by a number that begins with +353861804 and then ends with either 66 or 67.
