Warning of snow causing travel disruption in North East as wintry weather set to arrive overnight

Snow could cause major disruption overnight and on Friday as wintry weather hits parts of the North East.

Spells of snow over the hills and mountains are forecast to become more widespread this evening.

Two separate weather warnings covering the North East have now been issued by the Met Office with expected disruption on the roads as a result.

The first warning applies to western areas of Northumberland and County Durham and lasts from Thursday morning until 9am on Friday.

A further 2-5cm of snow is possible above 300-400m during Thursday. During the night, snow may briefly settle across areas as low as 150m above sea level before the snow level rises as milder air arrives from the east.

Snow is more likely to settle on higher ground, on the Pennines, with some brief sleet and snow showers elsewhere.

The second warning covers northern Northumberland and the Scottish borders where snowfall is expected between 10pm on Thursday until 9am on Friday.

Snow may briefly settle in the evening, although later in the night and on Friday morning the snow level will likely rise due to milder air.

Snow will then turn to persistent, and at times heavy, rain at lower levels.

Forecasters are warning there could be a chance of travel delays and vehicles becoming stranded.

Crashes could also become more likely during adverse weather conditions.

The weather is expected to turn dry and sunny over the weekend after the cold snap at the end of the week.
