Warning of fake Instagram emails claiming someone is trying to 'recover your password from Russia'

A warning has been issued of fake Instagram emails landing in people's inboxes.

Action Fraud, the national reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime, issued the urgent message on its social media pages after it said it received 272 reports of these emails in one week. It said the emails claim someone is trying to "recover your password from Russia".

The emails contain links which lead to malicious websites which are designed to steal Instagram login details. The messages are also made to look legitimate by including the Instagram logo sign.

Action Fraud urged people not to click on the links and report any suspicious emails by forwarding them to: report@phishing.gov.uk. A spokesperson said: "Action Fraud has received 272 reports in one week relating to the fake emails purporting to be someone from Instagram.

"The emails state that someone from Russia is attempting to reset the recipient's Instagram account password. The links in the emails lead to malicious websites that are designed to steal Instagram login details."

Action Fraud said if you have received an email which you’re not quite sure about, forward it to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS): report@phishing.gov.uk. The message might be from a company you don’t normally receive communications from, or someone you do not know.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) will analyse the suspect email and any websites it links to. They'll use any additional information you’ve provided to look for and monitor suspicious activity.
