Warning of 'avalanche' of evictions this Summer if ban isn't extended

There will be an “avalanche” of evictions this summer if the Government doesn’t extend the eviction ban, a TD has warned.

People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd Barrett said the coalition must act “very, very quickly”. His party is introducing the Eviction Ban Bill which will be debated in the Dail tomorrow and if it was introduced would ensure a “comprehensive” block on no-fault evictions for the entirety of the housing crisis.

People Before Profit has said it is a “vital measure that will give tenants minimum but temporary security (and) is the only possible answer to a housing crisis.”

But Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien said yesterday that no decision on whether or not the eviction ban will be extended has been made. The Fianna Fail deputy said: “No decision has been made regarding the proposed extension of the eviction ban. It is important that people know that that’s in place, not just to end of March, but for most people, it’s scaled to the 18th of June this year.”

During an interview with Newstalk, he added: “I did say at the time when I brought it in that it was a temporary measure and it would allow us the opportunity to do things like the purchase of homes with tenants in situ - which we’ve doing right across the country.”

He stressed that there would be an assessment “over the coming weeks” and said the issue was “legally complex”. The ban was introduced “to afford time for housing supply to increase and to reduce the burden on homelessness services.”

Housing Campaigner Peter McVerry called on the Government to construct 7,000 modular homes instead of the promised 700 in a bid to ease the crisis.
