Warning not to book a summer holiday as lockdown may go on

People across the UK planning to book a summer holiday have been warned to think twice amid fears the lockdown could continue.

Government minister Grant Shapps today said he 'won't be booking a summer holiday at this point' with concerns some restrictions could continue for months to come.

This week the Government extended the lockdown for another three weeks - taking it into the start of May - and Dominic Raab indicated it could be extended into June.

When rules were first put in place urging everyone to stay at home Prime Minister Boris Johnson said they could last three months.

There have also been reports that some elements of lockdown could last much longer - possibly into 2022 - and there have been calls for changes after lockdown rules are lifted.

That could include encouraging people to continue working from home, and encouraging people to wear masks when they travel.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said he would certainly not be booking a summer holiday at present.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Mr Shapps said that “clearly people will want to see what the trajectory of this disease is in the next few weeks”.

He added: “I won’t be booking a summer holiday at this point, let’s put it that way.”

Asked whether passenger numbers could be restricted during rush hour after lockdown measures are removed, Mr Shapps said: “It may well be in the future companies say actually it’s worked pretty well having some of our staff working from remote locations, why don’t we carry on doing that?

“Actually why does everybody have to get up and travel during the rush hour at a particular time in the morning?”

He added: “There may be different ways to help, both in terms of businesses and organisations making those decisions, but also to do with the way that Government responds to spread the load better.”
