Warning issued to Santry residents over sneaky new way burglars are trying to get into people's homes

North Dublin residents have been warned about a sneaky new way burglars are appearing to use to worm their way into people's homes.

Devious thieves are attempting to disrupt the water supply outside house in a bid to then gain access to the properties.

The warning was issued by a Santry man who almost caught two men in the act on Tuesday afternoon.

Taking to a number of local Facebook groups, he wrote: "They had obtained access to the water manhole outside my house. As soon as I pulled up they fled, leaving water on the path and the road.

"I went into my home to discover the water from the kitchen tap is running brown dirty water.

"I rang Irish Water to report the discoloration and they advised me they had nobody in the Santry area working on the water today."

The concerned local also reported the strange goings on to Santry garda station, who offered some advice which he also shared with his neighbours.

"Do not let anyone into your home to test your water even if it's brown or turned off.

"Ask for ID and then ring Irish Water to confirm the ID is legitimate before opening your door but do not allow people access the house.

"If you are intimidated or even have a slight doubt then call the Gardai immediately.

"It's possible that someone is tampering with the water outside in order to access your property. Stay Safe."

A spokeswoman for Irish Water told Dublin Live:" Irish Water would like to advise customers that Irish Water workers including Local Authority staff and contractors always carry identification when working on behalf of Irish Water.

"Customers should never admit anyone to their home claiming to be working for Irish Water without asking for their ID.

"If you are unsure as to whether the ID is valid or not you can call our customers care helpline which is open 24/7 on 1850 278 278 and we can advise you if there are works taking place in your area."
