Warning issued to pupils after man seen loitering by the gates of a school

A warning has been issued to pupils after a man was seen loitering around the gates of a school in Tameside.

A man with 'curly mousey scraggy' hair, thought to be in his fifties, was seen close to the entrance to Fairfield High School for Girls in Droylsden this morning.

The man, who was wearing a camouflage coat and scarf that covered most of his face, ran off when approached by staff.

An email sent to parents reads: "This morning at around 8.06am there was a white male loitering at the side of the gate of Fairfield High School (Movarian Settlement entrance). He was about six feet tall, white and had what was described as curly, mousey, scraggy hair'.

"He was wearing a camouflage combat coat, and a camouflage scarf which covered both his mouth and his nose. It was difficult to gauge his age as the only visible part of his face was his eyes.

"The staff that were outside on duty envisage that he could have been in his early 50s. When a member of staff went over to speak to him, he ran off."

The email goes on to explain that the incident was reported to the police and staff have informed pupils about what happened, and reminded them of the potential dangers of speaking to people they do not know.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "At around 9.10am on Tuesday 15 September 2020, police received a report of earlier suspicious circumstances on Fairfield Avenue, Droylsden.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
