Warning issued to learner drivers of upcoming major rule change

In a driving shake up, learner drivers won't need to know how to change gears.

Gears are only relevant in manual cars, and as petrol and diesel cars will no longer be allowed from 2030, it means that the gearbox will reportedly be a thing of the past as only automatic cars will be used.

Some younger motorists learning the ropes are already using automatic vehicles.

Edmund King, president of the AA, told the Telegraph that the all electric vehicle (EV) trend was happening already and new drivers won't need to learn how to change gear.

He said: "The world of cars is changing. A revolution is coming. I think younger people are beginning to realise that 2030 is really not very far away.

"There is increasingly an acknowledgement that you do not necessarily need to learn how to change gear. In the very near future, you will only need to drive an automatic, because all EVs are automatic.

"Obviously, it is much harder to learn on a stickshift, because the most difficult thing to gather is clutch control. That takes up the first five lessons."

As from the New Year, lessons at the British School of Motoring will for the first time include electric cars.

Instead of learning how to change gear, driving students will instead learn about conserving their battery and driving with one pedal.

While more and more people are learning how to drive in automatic vehicles, there is still hesitancy about buying EVs.

The president of the AA said: "There is still a reluctance among young people to actually buy an EV because they are quite pricey and the insurance costs a lot too."
