Warning issued to every Brit travelling to Spanish islands this summer

People travelling to a number of Spanish islands are being warned to make sure they have a safe holiday as part of a summer campaign.

The "Stick with your Mates" project is being repeated this year in Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca. It was first launched in 2019, prior to the covid pandemic.

The campaign comes after research found the vast majority of fatal accidents and hospitalisations happened when people were alone, having been separated from their friends.

Young people especially are advised to:

  • check into your hotel on social media, so it’s easier to find at the end of the night
  • set up a WhatsApp group to keep in touch with each other
  • keep an eye on each other’s drinks to make sure they don’t get spiked
  • not let a friend walk back to their hotel alone
  • not give a drunk person more alcohol

Holidaymakers are also being warned of a zero tolerance approach to excessive drinking or anti-social behaviour. The number of British tourists is expected to reach pre-pandemic levels in the Balearic Islands.

Recent laws will also impact those staying at certain all inclusive resorts, as well as those wishing to purchase alcohol from shops. Party boat trips and happy hours have also been affected.

Thomas Cook is just one travel agent that has warned holidaymakers over rules that will crack down on their alcohol consumption. In an email the tour operator sent to customers, it said: "Please be advised that a decree has been issued by the Balearic Government on a new restriction for All-Inclusive meal options.

"There is a maximum of six alcoholic drinks per person per day that can be served and these drinks will be provided only during lunch and dinner (three each). Please be aware that Magaluf, El Arenal, Playa de Palma in Mallorca and Sant Antoni in Ibiza, there is a new restriction on All Inclusive."

The law came in during 2020, to limit extreme drunken behaviour that affects residents. The Balearic government has also banned happy hours, pub crawls and two-for-one drink offers.

Alcohol cannot be sold in shops between 9.30pm and 8am, and advertising party boats in certain areas is also forbidden.
