Warning issued to drivers who smoke over new Highway Code rule with hefty fine

New regulations coming into place could see drivers who smoke fined for throwing cigarette butts from their car's window, Kent Live reports.

While smoking in your car is not a crime - as long as all passengers over 18 years of age - but the "incorrect disposal of a cigarette" could cost you a fine between £50 and £100.

The new update to the Highway Code has come into action this week and is part of plans to introduce a risk based hierarchy of road users.

It is a driver's responsibility to remain up-to-date with changes to the Highway Code, but finance experts from CarMoney have warned more and more motorists are being caught out by "unexpected fines".

Andrew Marshall said: “More and more drivers are being caught out on the roads by unexpected fines. The new changes to the Highway Code will place more responsibility on road users and it will be a criminal offence to disobey them.

"More publicised offences, such as making phone calls whilst driving, are already deemed unacceptable in our society but simple things such as throwing a cigarette out of a window are what we see on journeys every day, and often without consequence.

"We are reminding road users to be considerate of other road users and obey driving laws for their own safety and the safety of others whilst travelling.”
